Barriers to HIV Testing Data

These data resulted from a study of the reasons for delayed HIV testing, particularly among people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. There are two components to the data, one quantitative, the other qualitative. The quantitative component collected demographic and socio-economic data, along with data about people''s use of health services, attitudes towards HIV and perceptions of stigma. These were linked with the patients'' HIV-related clinical data to identify patients who were diagnosed late and the reasons for their late diagnosis. The qualitative component followed up the survey and approximately 20 HIV patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are interviewed. These interviews explore in depth some of the issues covered in the survey, in particular issues relating to patients'' use of health services. Data collection was completed in 2007. Method of Data Collection: Clinical measurements; face-to-face interview. Sampling Procedures: Convenience sample. Sample Population: A total of 114 participants were recruited comprising 61 from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities and 53 from Anglo-Australian backgrounds. The Anglo-Australian participants were recruited for comparative purposes only as the main focus of the study was on people from CALD backgrounds. Follow-up in-depth open-ended interviews were conducted with four participants. Time Dimensions: One-time cross-sectional study. Kind of Data: Survey, clinical data and interview.
