Some arthropods are known to harbor methanogens in their digestive tract. They belong to four orders, Methanobacteriales, Methanomassiliicoccales, Methanomicrobiales, and Methanosarcinales. Those arthropod-associated lineages of archaea evolved in parallel with known genera from mammals and represent new genus-level taxa. Our isolation effort provided six new isolates from cockroaches and millipedes that belong to the order Methanosarcinales. Three strains were isolated from cockroaches and represent new species in the genus Methanimicrococcus, while three other species were isolated from millipedes and form a new genus in the family Methanosarcinaceae.
