The goal of this project is to determine the function of a unique three gene islet found in the Staphylococcus aureus CC30 lineage. We have determined that this islet has a significant role in Staphylococcus aureus metabolism and adaptation to specific human niche environments during an infection. Because genes in this islet are also found in other bacterial pathogens, the outcome of our study has broad significance to control of bacterial pathogens.
