Experimental Dataset for FEM-Based Material Behavior Modeling of the ‘Chopin’ Apple Variety (PRELUDIUM 20 Project) Author: Assistant Professor Monika Słupska, Ph.D Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences Faculty of Life Sciences and Technology Institute of Agricultural Engineering 37a, Chełmońskiego Str. 51–630 Wrocław, Poland Email: monika.slupska@upwr.edu.pl Mobile: +48 785052155 ============================================================ 1. Project Description ============================================================ This dataset was generated as part of the PRELUDIUM 20 research project (NCN Project No. 2021/41/N/NZ9/02874). The main goal of the study was to develop finite element models (FEM) of tissue and whole fruit of the 'Chopin' apple variety at various ripening stages. The aim was to predict mechanical material behavior based on the physiological condition of the fruit. Although the project originally focused solely on 'Chopin' apples, comparisons with other modeling approaches and methods were also carried out during the course of the research. ============================================================ 2. Dataset Content and Structure ============================================================ The dataset contains experimental and modeling data organized into **five main folders** based on the type of analysis. Each folder is further structured by **ripening stage** (Development, Ripening, Senescence), and in some cases by **tissue type** (flesh/skin), **loading level**, or **test speed**. The dataset includes the following types of data: 1. Mechanical Testing (Instron) - Performed at various test speeds (compression and tensile) - Uniaxial compression data for apple flesh, skin, whole fruits - Data for fruits loaded to 20%, 50%, and 80% of destructive force 2. Surface Pressure Mapping (Tekscan) - Pressure distribution maps for different load levels 3. Micro-CT Imaging - 3D scans of apples under partial loading (20%, 50%, 80%) 4. FEM Models - Finite element models including geometry, material properties, and boundary conditions 5. Physicochemical and Structural Data - Excel file summarizing firmness, SSC, starch index, pH, malic acid, pectin content, density, and mechanical summary - Results of AFM testing for cell wall mechanical properties ============================================================ 3. File Formats ============================================================ The dataset includes the following file formats: - .xlsx, .csv – tabular data and summaries - .ind, .img, .cae, .comp, .vgl, .vol, .fsx, .xcf – FEM model and micro-CT-related formats - .jpg – selected 2D images - .doc – documentation or test notes ============================================================ 4. Usage Instructions ============================================================ - FEM models can potentially be opened in compatible FEM software (e.g., ABAQUS, ANSYS). Some data may require conversion depending on software capabilities. - Physicochemical and mechanical properties are provided in ready-to-use Excel format. - Micro-CT scans and surface pressure maps can be used for reverse engineering, model validation, or training purposes. - The dataset is not accompanied by scripts or specific software instructions. ============================================================ 5.
