Nostoc sp. 2RC is a photosynthetic, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium that was isolated as a possible cyanobiont from the fresh-water fern Azolla pinnata. This free-living, filamentous strain forms heterocysts in the absence of combined nitrogen and fixes nitrogen using one of three nitrogenase systems, Nif1, Nif2, or Vnf. Nostoc sp. 2RC is chemoheterotrophic and can use sugars as a carbon source. Nostoc sp. 2RC can infect the liverwort Blasia using motile hormogonia. Although Nostoc sp. 2RC is similar to the symbiotic strain Nostoc punctiforme PCC 73102 (NCBI:txid272131), it shares the greatest similarity with the non-symbiotic strain Nostoc linckia (NCBI:txid1091006).
