Data | The influence of Pharmaceutical Care on health outcomes in the elderly population: what do systematic reviews say?

<i>Objectives</i>: To evaluate the influence of Pharmaceutical Care on health outcomes in the elderly population, focusing on clinical outcomes and adherence to pharmacotherapy. <i>Methods</i>: Following PRISMA and PRIOR guidelines, an Overview of Systematic Reviews was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Scielo, and Google Scholar in May 2024. The search aimed to identify Systematic Reviews of pharmacist-led interventions for individuals over 60 years old that addressed health-related outcomes. Data synthesis was performed according to Cochrane Collaboration recommendations for Systematic Reviews. <i>Results:</i> A total of 2,343 records were retrieved, of which 12 Systematic Reviews met the eligibility criteria after screening. Reported outcomes included reductions in hospital admissions, Adverse Drug Events, emergency department visits, mortality, falls, polypharmacy, use of potentially inappropriate medications, and improvements in adherence to pharmacotherapy. Significant improvements were observed in reducing emergency visits, polypharmacy, inappropriate medication use, and improving adherence to pharmacotherapy. The outcomes with the highest methodological quality were the reduction of emergency department visits and the improvement in medication adherence. <i>Conclusions:</i> This study concluded that Pharmaceutical Care positively influences health outcomes in the elderly population, highlighting the importance of expanding its role in healthcare services, particularly to optimize pharmacotherapy and reduce the use of inappropriate medications.
