Number of municipal police officers in France 2019, by size of municipality

In 2019, municipalities or inter-municipalities with populations between 20,000 and 99,999 employed 8,568 municipal police officers, which represented more than one-third of the total number of French municipal police officers. Municipalities with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants employed only 692 municipal police officers that year. In 2021, the French municipality with the highest number of municipal police officers was Nice, located in the Alpes-Maritimes department (445).
