Publicly Announced Job Losses in Named Corporations in the UK, 1976-1981

<P>Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.</P><br>To assemble a computerised data set containing details of all locatable job losses occurring within named corporations in the U.K. between 1976 and 1981, using reports in the &lt;i&gt;Financial Times&lt;/i&gt;. The data set has been used in two ways:<br>
(a) to analyse aggregate patterns of job loss among leading corporations;<br>
(b) as a basis for depth case studies of selected corporations.<br><B>Main Topics</B>:<BR><br>Variables<br>
The data set contains three types of variable:<br>
(a) Details of job loss itself, e.g. total numbers lost; employment before loss; redundancy, closure or wastage.<br>
(b) Ownership details, e.g. name of parent; name of subsidiary; nationality of ownership.<br>
(c) Locational variables, e.g. place name as reported; county affected; location of parent headquarters; assisted-area status; settlement type of affected location.
