资源简介:
This project examines the degree to which Americans endorse rights related to freedom of speech. We focus on how support for free speech depends on the type and partisan source of that speech. Using two experiments fielded on a large, nationally representative survey of Americans, we find that support for speech is highest when it is abstract. Support changes when there are costs or tradeoffs attached to speech, such as speech being hurtful. Finally, we find no evidence that support depends on whether the source of speech is from the same or the opposition party. Our findings contribute to ongoing research on the conditions under which people are committed to free speech.
