The Ganges River in India represents an ideal ecosystem to study how microbes respond to anthropogenic inputs such as heavy contamination of industrial and human waste resulting from intensive industrialization and urbanization. Herein, we applied shotgun metagenomics sequencing to study microbial community dynamics and function in planktonic samples collected along a ~700 Km river transect in two years, before or after the monsoon rainy season.
