Growing evidence suggest that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are critical regulators of several biological processes. However, their functions in the nervous system, particularly their role in proper functioning of neural circuits is poorly understood. We have identified an lncRNA GM12371 that acts as a critical mediator of dendritic branching, synapse density and synaptic communication in hippocampal neurons. Importantly GM12371 modulates expression of several mRNAs involved in neuronal development and differentiation as well as specific lncRNAs and their mRNA targets.
