Replication data for the Project on Vietnamese Pre-service Mathematics Teachers’ Beliefs about Teaching Mathematics

This dataset includes 296 completed survey responses capturing the mathematics-related beliefs and self-efficacy of pre-service mathematics teachers in their third or fourth year of study at ten public teacher-training universities spanning northern, central, and southern Vietnam. The 90-item instrument pairs seven background items with 83 items rated on a five-point agreement scale, spanning twelve constructs: the nature of mathematics; teacher-centred versus student-centred teaching approaches; how students learn; the exam-driven context of instruction; personal beliefs about who mathematics suits; self-efficacy in motivating students, applying instructional strategies, and managing classrooms; connecting mathematics to real life; and, for one specific topic, knowledge and pedagogy for teaching the derivative. The item pool draws on recognized frameworks in the teacher-belief and self-efficacy literature, sharpened by an earlier qualitative interview phase and expert input. Responses were gathered anonymously online in Vietnamese from Mar to May 2025. The dataset includes raw data and a coding key, supporting replication, cross-national comparison, and secondary statistical analysis.
