Dataset of Ethnic Facial Images of Ecuadorian People

This dataset is made up of ethnic facial images
of Ecuadorian people. Data could be used in the development of research
projects related to ancestrality, detection of face parts and biometrics.

Each image has metadata of their respective
biometric measurements: eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth. In addition, this
dataset contains information related to: personal data, ethnic characteristics
and ancestry. Metadata about the ethnic and biometric facial information were
obtained by two techniques:

1. Application of artificial intelligence
algorithms: used for the detection, identification and face's biometry for the
extraction of anthropometric points of interest. These measurements are stored
in a XML file, with the points that the algorithm detected.

2. Surveys: used to obtain personal
information, ethnic characteristics, ancestry, ethnic self-denomination, etc.

The surveys and image dataset were taken, in
the period from April 1 to May 30, 2019. The demographic situation of the main
ethnic groups of Ecuador was considered and the sample was taken in the cities
of Quito, Guayaquil, Ibarra and Latacunga. The dataset compromises 430 images
of people (self-denominated) of the next ethnic groups:
• Afro-ecuadorian (50)

• European descendant (50)

• Indigenous (50)

• Mestizo (280)

The images have a resolution of 1920x1280
pixels in full color and the scenario that was defined for the capture has the
following characteristics:

• Background: White

• Distance of the individual towards the
camera: 1.10 [m]

• Brightness: front and side lighting

• Posture of the subject: straight with neutral
facial expression and free of objects that hinder the face.

All people who participated in the project gave
their consent for the use of their photography and personal information for
academic purposes, which include: scientific journals, presentations and
digital academic repositories.

About the Files:

• The images are distributed in four folders,
according to the ethnic group: Afro-ecuadorians, European descendants, Indigenous
and Mestizos.

• The technical specifications of the camera,
used in the construction of this dataset, are described in the file Cam_spec.csv
("Metadata" folder).

• Each of the XML files generated by ethnicity
are included in the "Metadata" folder.

• The answers of the applied survey and the
characteristics of the variables are included in the files:
Ethnic_facial_characteristics_answers.csv and Variables_characteristics.csv,
respectively, within the folder "Metadata".
