The harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) belong to the Delphinoida and are the sister group to the Monodontidae. It is one of the smallest Odontocetes and is found in coastal habitats across the northern hemisphere. Three subspecies, P. p. vomerina (North Pacific), P. p. relicta (Black Sea) and P. p. phocoena (North Atlantic), are accepted. The harbour porpoise genome will be useful for population genetic and phylogenomic investigations, as well as conservation measures.
