Content type: Tick infestation prevalence dataset in wild birds in the AmericasObjective: Provide a comprehensive dataset of reported tick infestation prevalence in wild birds in the Americas.Content overview: This dataset contains data from 72 studies that evaluated tick prevalence in wild birds in the Americas. Data includes habitat type, climatic conditions, bird species richness, and geographic location.Article summary: This literature review identified 72 studies that met inclusion criteria and provided data on tick prevalence in birds. Using generalized additive models (GAMs), the effect of environmental factors, such as habitat type, climatic conditions, bird species richness, and geographic location, on tick infestation was evaluated. Results showed that most bird infestation cases involved immature ticks, such as larvae or nymphs, while adult ticks were present in only 13% of cases. Tick-infested birds were identified from twelve countries in the Americas, and the genera Amblyomma (68%), Ixodes (22%), Haemaphysalis (5%), Dermacentor (1%), and Rhipicephalus (0.8%) were found. Findings revealed that agricultural-semiurban habitats have lower tick infestation, possibly due to unfavorable microclimates. Precipitation and bird species richness were positively associated with infestation. A nonlinear relationship was found between tick infestation and geographic location, with infestation rates increasing towards the equator but decreasing at the extremes of the Americas. Results highlight the importance of understanding how environmental and bird community factors influence tick infestation in wild birds in the Americas, as well as the dynamics of tick-borne diseases and their impact on biodiversity.
