Precipitation volume (L m-2 month-1) and averaged elemental concentrations (mg L-1 month-1) of nutrients measured in HP collected for 12 consecutive months (Jan–Dec-2011) in the study area. The monthly data was grouped into four climatically distinct seasons of three months each: Autumn (Mar, Apr and May), winter (Jun, Jul and Aug), spring (Sep, Oct and Nov) and summer (Dec, Jan and Feb) and averaged across the sites (mean ± SE, n = 7), but excluding the site closest to the coast (S1 Table). Different letters indicate significant seasonal differences (P < 0.05, bold text) determined using ANCOVA (categorical variable = season; continuous variable = distance from ocean) followed by post-hoc Tukey tests. There were no significant distance x season interaction effects on any of the nutrients except SRP. Seasonal (i.e. over 3 months) horizontal precipitation (HP) volumes and elemental concentrations.
