The black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) is one of the most commercially important penaeid species in Asia, especially in South China. Although the P. monodon has been reared for many years, the aquaculture production and large-scale cultivation are still restricted by the supply of high-quality broodstocks, especially in non-native countries such as China. In recent years, the unilateral eyestalk ablation are applied broadly in aquatic breeding industry to induce P. monodon ovarian maturation, and then to get a large amount of high-quality broodstocks. However, this technique can lead to the death of parent shrimp and lower spawning quality. Therefore, the exploring of an alternative approaches to the unilateral eyestalk ablation is imperative. Though many efforts have been made in exploring such methods and some findings are also achieved, the more effective methods are still unavailable at the present. Previous studies related to shrimp culture mainly focused on disease resistance mechanisms and culturing techniques, and basic knowledge related to its reproductive activity and molecular aspects of ovarian development remain scarce. In order to elucidate the molecular mechanism that regulates the shrimp development and reproduction, it is important to study the regulatory mechanisms of ovarian development in this species.In the present work, we carried out high-throughput sequencing of transcriptomes of ovary tissues in undevelopment and development black tiger shrimps. Based on the transcriptome sequencing conducted in this study, we identified a large of ovarian development related genes from the two different ovarian development stages. This work would provide genomic resources of mRNAs, which are important for further studies in the ovarian development, and provide data support for exploiting alternative technology to eyestalk-ablation.
