The common garter snake is one of the most widespread species of North American reptile, and one that has had extensive research, serving as a model organism for quantitative genetics, demography, and long-term field research spanning several decades. In California, it has declined precipitously in the southern part of the state, and it is listed as a 'Species of Special Concern" from roughly Los Angeles south to the Mexico-US border. These data have been produced as part of the CCGP. Sequencing was conducted with HiFi Pacific Biosciences long reads at UCDavis Genome Core, Dovetail's OmniC libraries, and Illumina sequencing at UCBerkeley QB3 Genomics Core.
