The Composite Cross II experiment of barley (Hordeum vulgare) was initiated in 1927 and now has been continued for nearly 60 generations. Using material spanning 40 generations, gross phenotypes were acquired for over 200 individuals in four generations. Genotype ascertainment using RADSeq for the progeny and whole genome sequencing for the 28 parental lines was done to look at genetic changes over time. This experiment allows us to watch evolution happening, not just the end product.
