Supporting Code and Data for "Innovation and Capital"

The code in this replication package produces the tables and figures of the paper and appendix from several data sources. This replication package lists the necessary source data and code to replicate the results. The code itself details the process. All source data have been made available in the repository except for (1) VentureXpert data on venture capital, which is readily downloadable with most universities’ access, (2) patent data from the replication archive of Gross and Sampat (2023) containing information on government-interest patents and which were used (in part) to supplement our main patent data source, and (3) high growth entrepreneurship data from the Startup Cartography Project (SCP) of Guzman and Stern (2020).

Python code runs on Python 3.9.

Stata code runs on Stata-MP version 18.

To replicate the paper’s results, and to understand the order and manner in which data sets were processed and combined, one can follow the code from source data to output. The paper’s “Data and Sample” section and Appendix A are informative on sources, references to papers with even more detail on parts of the data, and construction of measures.
