Working Environment of Bus Drivers, 1978

The survey of the working environment of bus drivers in Copenhagen, Odense and Aarhus was carried out in the period September 1977 to July 1980. The background for carrying out the survey was a presumption that there was an increase in the number of days of absence owing to ill-health, an increase in the number of bus drivers who retired on voluntary early retirement pay, an increase in the number of deaths among bus drivers as well as a presumption that air pollution in the cities was a health risk to the bus drivers. #The survey consists of four parts: #1) A historical prospective sequential survey of the number of days of absence owing to ill-health as well as retirement (including reasons for retirement) in the period 1 September, 1972 to 31 October, 1977. #2) A cross-sectional survey based on questionnaires to all full-time employed bus drivers in the three cities. The questionnaires contained questions about working environment as well as about the physical and mental condition of the bus drivers. #3) A medical cross-sectional examination (random sample survey) in order to assess the physical condition of the bus drivers as well as certain psychological functions related to the neuro-toxicological influence of air pollution in big cities. #4) A survey of a reference group (engine drivers on S-trains in Copenhagen), special importance being attached to assessing possible changes of the psychological functions. #This data material contains information from parts 2, 3 and 4
