According to a survey conducted in November 2019 about diversity in the workplace, around 93 percent of Japanese respondents were aware of the existence of LGBT individuals in society. Approximately seven percent of respondents stated not to have heard about the term before. The acronym LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and has been used since the 1990s. It is an umbrella term for individuals identifying as non-heterosexual or non-cisgender, with the latter meaning that the individual's gender identity does not match their sex assigned at birth.
