China Coal Mining Water Consumption Dataset

Coal resource-based cities are annually plagued by significant water resource wastage, extensive land subsidence, and polluting gas emissions due to coal mining, leading to severe ecological degradation in the surrounding areas. Investigating the relationship between coal mining and water resources in China's coal resource-based cities is crucial for addressing urban energy and environmental challenges. This research encourages these cities to update coal mining technologies and management practices to promote sustainable and green development. Our study focuses on the lifecycle water usage in coal production in Chinese coal resource-based cities, utilizing the commonly employed water utilization coefficient method based on coal production data to assess water consumption. The results indicate that water consumption in coal mining is predominantly concentrated in the Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, and Shanxi regions of the Jin-Shan-Mongolia-Ningxia-Gansu area, with relatively lower usage in other regions.
