Research data supporting “Roman York: beneath the Streets”

This data set contains information and resources from the Roman York: beneath the streets project between November 2021 and April 2024. The datasets comprise: (1) Ground Penetrating Radar surveys of five areas: along the streets of the city (by CatSurveys; along Toft Green street (by Lieven Verdonck, as a control), and three area surveys around York Minster Precinct and York Museum Gardens, and a repeat survey with a different antennae of the Residence Garden within York Minster Precinct (by Lieven Verdonck). The total areas surveyed amounted to 7.2 ha. Data were collected using a range of different systems detailed in the metadata files (CSV). The GPR data are presented georeferenced time-slices (GeoTIFFs). (2) A shapefile of the interpretation of the GPR anomalies from the area surveys by John Creighton, which were the basis for the archaeological interpretation, along with PDFs of the formal Historic Environment Record and Historic England reports for each survey. (3) (a) A relational database of all the Roman discoveries within York City Council area (provided as a MS Access file, or as individual CSV files, with PDF reports of site, ceramic and burial data; (b) associated shapefiles digitising the location and Roman features discovered in the city, combined with attribute tables of their nature, date and other characteristics; and (c) a PDF providing further information on how to use the data, and how to reconstruct the relational database.
