Probing magnetic states of monolayer transition metal tellurides

Atomically thin magnets are a key element for the development of spintronics based on two-dimensional materials. Among 2D materials, transition metal ditellurides (TMDTs) are known for their interesting layer dependent electronic and optical properties.
Recently, we successfully developed an MBE-based growth protocol to synthesize two novel TMDTs in monolayer form, TaTe2 and MnTe2, both predicted to host a magnetically ordered ground state. We propose to investigate the currently unexplored magnetic configuration of these two novel monolayer materials. The magnetic anisotropy and local magnetic moment information on these new atomically thin laers will provide an insight in the fundamental physics of 2D magnets and will help push the potential applications of 2D magnetism.
