Eye health promotion in multi-sectoral settings: A systematic review of intervention types and effectiveness

This data supports the systematic review on the nature and effectiveness of eye health promotion interventions implemented by eye health professionals in multi-sectoral settings. Following CRD guidance and reported per PRISMA 2020, we searched PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Academic Search Complete (EBSCOhost) for studies published 1999–2024, supplemented by hand searching. Two independent reviewers screened, extracted, and appraised studies using MMAT (2018). From 15,554 records, 80 studies met eligibility. Interventions spanned hospitals, primary health centres/clinics, schools, workplaces, community events, and online platforms and were grouped as health education/counselling, vision/eye screening and training programmes, prevention/promotion initiatives, policy actions, ophthalmic intervention programmes, comprehensive eye examinations, and diabetic retinopathy screening. Most studies reported significant improvements in knowledge, behaviours, service uptake, and/or clinical outcomes. Evidence gaps include participant compliance, follow-up systems, and policy integration across sectors.
