The striped bass is one parent of the hybrid striped bass (white bass, Morone chrysops X striped bass, M. saxatilis), which is a major aquaculture species in the United States, and is itself cultured for market. The striped bass genome sequence will enable whole genome-enabled selective breeding of Morone species, which aims to improve traits in commercial production, and empower ongoing functional genomics and proteomics research on striped bass nutrition and growth, disease resistance, and reproduction.
