This is a shotgun metagenome of toombak smokeless tobacco from Sudan, Africa. Toombak is known for its high levels of tobacco-specific nitrosamines. Tobacco-specific nitrosamines are created when nitrite interacts with alkaloids, such as nicotine, that are in high levels in tobacco. We are interested in what microbes may be reducing nitrate to nitrite and releasing it.
