Auditory Evoked Potentials in Aquatic Animals: A Review of Threshold Determination Methods Publication List

Introduction This is a list of the publications included in "Auditory Evoked Potentials in Aquatic Animals: A Review of Threshold Determination Methods". The following information is included for each publication: (1) Title, (2) published year, (3) family of studied animal (4) major animal group category of studied animal, (5) AEP threshold determination method, and (6) study authors. This table is formatted in a "long" format, meaning each unique observation is listed in its own row. This dataset consists of 109 papers, all of which were coded systematically. Search Method Papers for this review were identified through systematic searches using Boolean search queries across multiple scientific databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, and Earth, Atmospheric & Aquatic Science Collection from Proquest. Additional studies were incorporated by examining the bibliographies of relevant publications identified during the initial search. Inclusion Criteria Studies were included if they met all of the following criteria: (1) the paper was peer-reviewed and published in a scientific journal, (2) AEPs were measured using surface or subcutaneous electrodes to measure auditory thresholds, (3) the subject of the study was an aquatic animal, and (4) the paper was published after 2014. The following aquatic animal groups were included in search queries: fishes, aquatic mammals, aquatic reptiles, amphibians, aquatic birds, mollusks, crustaceans, cnidarians (e.g., jellyfish), echinoderms (e.g., sea stars), sponges, and annelids (e.g., leeches). Exclusion Criteria Studies were excluded if: (1) AEPs were measured but did not identify auditory thresholds explicitly or (2) if they lacked a substantial description of the methods used to define an auditory response. Studies that measured AEPs in mainly terrestrial and arboreal amphibian families were excluded as well (i.e., Bufonidae, Brachycephalidae, and Rhacophoridae). Limitations A limitation of this review is the possibility that relevant studies were inadvertently excluded. This may have occurred if papers were published in journals that are not included in the databases used or if abstracts and keywords did not reference terms such as “AEP,” “ABR,” or “electrophysiology.”
