Sphingobacterium sp. PM2-P1-29 was isolated from soil near a pig pen. It carries tet(X) encoding a monooxygenase degrading tetracycline. Sphingobacterium sp. PM2-P1-29 exhibits TetX acvity and can transform tetracycline. It is the first tet(X) host to do so. In recent years the gene is increasingly being detected in pathogens and clinical isolates. Sphingobacterium sp. PM2-P1-29 remains the only bacterium naturally carrying tet(X) with demonstrated ability to degrade tetracycline. Thus its genome sequence is of interest.
