This dataset accompanies the following article: “Blareau E., Requier, F. (in revision) Is nocturnal pollination important for crop production? Experimental evidence from small fruit crops. Journal of applied entomology”. Using pollinator exclusion methods to prevent either diurnal or nocturnal pollinator visits to flowers of raspberry (Rubus idaeus), red currant (Ribes rubrum), and black currant (Ribes nigrum), we assess the contributions of day-active and night-active pollinators to yield of these crops, measured via fruit set, fruit mass, fruit volume and seed set. We find that nocturnal pollination improves seed set of all three crops, as well as fruit volume of red currant, compared to exclusion of all insect visits. This confirms the existence of nocturnal pollination services for these crops.
Two datasets are available:
(1) Fruit_set : This dataset contains information on the number of flowers that successfully produced fruits for the different pollination treatments and for the different crops:
