Within the Siphini tribe, pseudogenisation of the biotin and riboflavin biosynthetic genes in the Siphini's Buchnera last common ancestor rendered Buchnera unable to supply these essential nutrients to the aphid, and thus triggered the establishment of a secondary co-obligate endosymbiont. Through whole-genome sequencing, we determined that Sipha (Rungsia) maydis apparently harbours a Serratia symbiotica symbiont as Buchnera's co-obligate endosymbiont.
