Hydrological and climatic changes in eastern Central Asia are highly sensitive to mid-latitude atmospheric circulation. To clarify the long-term variations of hydroclimate in this region and their relationships with atmospheric circulation, this study utilized drill cores from Sayram Lake, a deep-water lake in the central Tianshan Mountains. Based on 137Cs, 210Pb and AMS 14C dating, multiple proxies including organic carbon, organic nitrogen, C/N ratio, carbonate content and grain size of the lake cores were analyzed, and the hydroclimatic change history of this region since the Late Holocene was reconstructed. The results show that four periods of significant precipitation increase (4000–3780, 3590–3210, 2800–2160 and 890–280 cal a BP) and one period of slight precipitation increase (1700–1370 cal a BP) have occurred since the Late Holocene. These findings are consistent with existing precipitation/humidity records in eastern Central Asia, indicating that the region has exhibited similar hydroclimatic change patterns since the Late Holocene. Reduced solar activity and the southward shift of atmospheric circulation across the entire circum-North Atlantic region, especially the southward shift of the main path of the mid-latitude westerlies, may be the primary causes of hydroclimatic changes in eastern Central Asia since the Late Holocene. In addition, the results from Sayram Lake also reveal a significant increase in precipitation in this region over the past century, but more in-depth studies using different archives are required to clarify the future hydroclimatic changes in Central Asia.
