The role of the androgen receptor has not been clearly defined in breast cancer (BC). Thus, we evaluated whether androgen receptor (AR) gene expression levels relative to estrogen receptor (ESR1) and progesterone receptor (PGR) gene expression levels allow differentiating BC tumor subtypes. mRNA expression levels were assessed by RNA-seq in cell lines representative of luminal A (MCF7), luminal B (BT474), luminal AR (LAR) (apocrine; MDA-MB453), and triple-negative BC cells (basal; MDA-MB231) subtypes.
