The fungus-growing ant Trachymyrmex septentrionalis are important members of pine-barren ecosystems in the eastern United States and closely related to leaf-cutter ants. The goal of this study was to characterize the fungal communities of wild T. septentrionalis fungus gardens using ITS2 community amplicon sequencing of field-collected fungus garden samples preserved in the field immediately following excavation.
