Laying Hen and Duck Infectious Coryza PCR

Testing strategies for infectious coryza (IC) in laying hen flocks have not been developed. There is a standard testing procedure for the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP). We used this strategy to collect data on flocks with and without a history of IC. Wild water may be a fomite for transmission of Avibacterium paragallinarum (AP) but data on their IC status is not available.we collected samples from 15 layer flocks, 4 with a history of testing positive for AP, two flocks with clinical signs of AP, and nine flocks with no history of testing positive for AP. We used the NPIP Clean protocol to collect swab and then tested the swabs by PCR. In addition, 240 wild ducks from eight Pennsylvania (PA) counties were swabbed and those swabs were also pooled and tested by PCR.
