The genomes associated with this project were sequenced to understand how diploid yeast with very strong mutator phenotypes avoid extinction. Each culture was initiated from an independent zygote clone, which was propagated between ~120 or ~270 cellular generations depending on the strain. After this period of evolution, up to three subclones were isolated from each culture, assayed for the mutator phenotype, and then sequenced by whole genome sequencing. We made phylogenetic trees to understand the relationship between the subclones and the antimutator changes that allowed them to survive.
