This study assessed salivary microbiome composition of 82 generally healthy Dutch elderly, aged 58 - 80 years (average 66 years, SD 6.6), participating at LASA (Longitudinal Age Study Amsterdam) study (www.lasa-vu.nl). The barcoded amplicons of hypervariable regions V5-V7 of 16S rDNA were sequenced by the means of 454 pyrosequencing. Additionally, relative proportion of salivary Candida (Candida load) was determined. For this, ITS (Candida specific) qPCR and 16S rDNA (bacterial) qPCR was performed. The relation between Candida load and bacterial profiles was assessed by diversity statistics and OTU-based an phylogeny-based metrics.
