NRS-4511 | Indexes and registers to despatches from the Secretary of State

Each register records: registered number or type of despatch (circular, confidential etc.); date of despatch and receipt; subject; whether an answer is required; date and number of answer; and remarks (action to be taken or information to be acquired). The volumes for October 1837-April 1842, March 1846-March 1899 and May 1914-September 1949 are indexed in front of each volume. The indexes are arranged chronologically under the letters of the alphabet. The volume for April 1842-March 1846 (4/1606) has no index although 4/1614 would serve for the period 1845-46. 4/1614 indexes the despatches for the period 1845-53.
