Serratia marcescens is a rare pathogen for central nervous system infections. Antibiotic resistance is growing in S. marcescens clinical isolates due to beta-lactamases, including ampC beta-lactamase, metallo-beta-lactamase, and multiple potential multidrug efflux pumps, in addition to bacteriocin and pigment genes. Due to the restricted treatment choices, and the rise of carbapenem-resistant clinical isolates, it is challenging to treat infections caused by S. marcescens. The existence of numerous carbapenemases within the same strain exacerbates this problem.
