Digital Archive from an Archaeological Evaluation at Houghall Campus, East Durham College, Durham, County Durham, September - December 2024

This collection comprises images and site records from an archaeological evaluation at Houghall Campus, East Durham College, Durham, County Durham. Work was carried out by Thames Valley Archaeological Services Ltd from September to December 2024. The site is located on the southern side of East Durham College's Houghall Campus, between the city of Durham and the village of Shincliffe, on the west bank of the River Wear. Twenty 25m long and 1.8m wide trenches were excavated and recorded to assess the presence/absence, extent, condition, character, quality and date of any archaeological remains present. Geophysical anomalies were investigated and one was found to be a probable field drain and another a modern gully. A further gully revealed during the evaluation was post-medieval in date. Redeposited subsoil observed in some trenches probably relates to the previous use of the site as rugby pitches in the post war period.
