The German Federal Republic’s Statistics of labour disputes in the period of 1949 to 1980.

The ‚statistics of labor disputes’ is a publication of the German research foundation’s (DFG) priority program titled ‚sources and investigations on Historical Statistics of Germany’. This reference work contains time series on the development of labor disputes and lockouts. The investigator distinguished between different development stages and constituted types of strikes.
Central variables of the strike research are the number of cases (the ‘case’ is the single labor dispute occurrence), number of persons involved and number of lost working days. These variables can also be taken as indicators for frequencies and intensity of the labor disputes. Furthermore the labor disputes had been distinguished according to their length and according to the organization (organized strike by unions or unauthorized strike) of strikes in connection with bargaining.

A selection of the collected time series can be downloaded via HISTAT (www.histat.gesis.org).
HISTAT is only offered in German language. The data tables are into three parts: Overviews; structural tables and base tables. The base tables contain the yearly extent of strikes and lockouts. Overview and structure tables have been fully incorporated in HISTAT, the base tables have been only incorporated in the case if they show the strike occurrences on the level of Germany (without differentiation by the single German Länder).
