This strain belongs to a persisting and widespread MDR epidemic clone of P. aeruginosa from Brazil (Clone SP). This clone is mainly characterized by the presence of the blaSPM gene that confers resistance to all beta-lactams antibiotics, including carbapenems, which are the one of the first line antibiotics used to treat P. aeruginosa infections.
