Comparative analysis of batoid genomes

Vertebrates exhibit a remarkable diversity in genome sizes, as well as in chromosome size and number. However, typical genomic analyses have largely focused on reconstructing ancestral karyotypes based on the positions of well-conserved protein-coding genes, leaving patterns of genome size variation insufficiently explored. Additionally, our understanding of vertebrate genome architecture remains limited due to the scarcity of elasmobranch genome assemblies across varying sizes. In this study, we present the first whole-genome sequences of two batoid species. These assemblies provide novel insights into the evolutionary dynamics of genomic compositions.
