Italian pig production chain has some specificity due to the high percentage of pigs slaughtered to produce high quality POD dry cured hams that is absolutely unique in the world. The research program has involved three academic partners and two research institutes and has concerned different points of the pig production chain with the aim to knowledge, innovation and useful application in order to overcome the critical points of the Italian productive system. One of the goals of this project was targeted to the genetic improvement of Italian heavy pig with new genomic techniques. The research activities was carried out by field and laboratory experiments that included the development and utilization of different pig population from which were measured phenotypic data, collected biological samples, performed analyses. The analyses were carried out using the most innovative technologies and approaches available for the different field of research and for the experimental model utilized. The project produced results with outcomes on the whole Italian pig production chain. In particular, some results could be applied in the improvement of the traditional Italian selection scheme by introducing new knowledge and new tools derived by the analysis of the porcine genome to improve some traits related to fat deposition specific of Italian swine breeding.
