This series contains inwards correspondence received by the Harbour Master at Melbourne. The Harbour Master was responsible for the oversight of matters concerned with the administration of the Port and control of the entry into and exit from the port by vessels. Correspondence in custody is concerned mainly with matters relating to the employment of pilots for the pilotage of ships from Bass Strait into the Port and the costs, matters pertaining to the marking of shipping channels and other matters relating to the Harbour Masters responsibilities.
