This replication data represents an evolving record of all auction and sales prices for paintings that range from $10,000 and above, transacted from 1895 to 1939. The paper compares these premium prices between Old Master art, what it terms as "classic French modern art," and contemporary art. It demonstrates how classic French modern paintings sold for prices nearly as high as Old Master paintings, especially in comparison to the significantly lowers prices achieved by contemporary painting. The paper provides some possible explanations for this data, and discusses the impact of this kind of painting within the international art market of the period.
