Streptococcus sanguinis strain 2908 was isolated from a human throat swab in 1975. It was shown to exhibit twitching motility, a hallmark of bacteria expressing retractable type IV pili (Tfp). It is also naturally competent for DNA transformation and has thus been chosen as a Gram-positive model to study Tfp biology.
