State Wildlife Action Plan Landscape Regions

Every state in the United States must submit a State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) to receive federal funds. Since 2005, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) requires states to submit a revision of its SWAP every 10 years. New Jersey is working on our 2025 SWAP revision as required by the USFWS. To improve the usability and implementation of our State Wildlife Action Plan, refining existing landscape regions is needed. The SWAP Landscape Regions better defines areas with similar habitat and species assemblages providing a more strategic area to identify threats facing at-risk species in a Landscape Region. Foundational to the SWAP is providing users with a set of priority threats and actions at the Landscape Region level. By focusing implementers of the SWAP to take targeted actions in targeted areas, we have a better chance to improve populations of our at-risk species.
