In this study, we used metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA gene to generate gill microbiomes from specimens of Scomber scombrus bought at the fish market as fresh products but whose labels showed they had been harvested in the Atlantic or Mediterranean FAO fishing areas. The microbial data were then analysed with the aim to evaluate their ability to keep signals of the different geographical origins and the presence of taxa with potential role of spoilers, foodborne pathogens, or histamine producers.
